-Digital self-portrait sketch



This was the first variation of my digital sketch created using Adobe sketch , I wanted to keep the style quite loose and focus more on main features to help bring the portrait together, to get proportions more accurately I used a grid and photograph reference  

 
- In this version, I went over with a light grey wash to focus on highlight and shadows to see how the drawing would look with more depth. Overall I think this self-portrait task was challenging as it took a lot of time and accuracy to try to create the portrait. Also because its an art form I'm not used to I think the outcomes could use further development in a lot of areas in order to be more realistic as again it's not what I'm used to. However, after Friday's lecture, I was able to see that we could also create more expressive portraits and be abstract in how we present ourselves which is something I would like to experiment with in future.

Visual  Mindmap  This mindmap acted as a way of generating ideas around the new project with connections to ideas about self-image and how you see yourself while keeping it mainly visual and expressive through my drawings.  I wanted the overall structure of the page to be quite messy like myself but keeping the mindmap structure in place loosely by adding a rough abstract sketch of myself in the centre as a starting point. Through a lens - artist research - Uijung Kim

  Uijung Kim Uijung Kim is a South Korean illustrator whos work draws inspiration from her childhood,family, friends and life experiences. This helps to create a variety of illustrations that are varied with emotion and creative scenery Kims work has also been recognized by companies such as American Illustration and The Society of Illustrators. I really like this artist's use of colour as the bold lines and bright choices complement the happy emotions and fit with the cute cartoon style-personally this interests me as I would like to work on using more cartoon styles in my own work and may use this artist as inspiration 'NYC' . Also, the way that the artist decorates her background with small details similar to what I like to add into my own work however I could experiment with using different shapes and colours in a way similar to Kim to experiment and develop my style further. Through a lens - Self portrait Sketch - pencil

Self portrait sketch  Overall, I found it very challenging to do the self portrait task as it had been a long time since I attempted more realistic sketching than abstract but it has encouraged me to try and improve on this skill more this year through various activities such as joining life drawing classes and practicing portraits more at home .  One thing which I think has worked well in this drawng is the basic proportions are  accurate to the photo refrence as I  used the gridding method , im also happy with some of the shading and tone. However I think overall if I wanted to improve this piece I would need to spend more time on details to the face and hair and clothes in order to improve .   Another thing that I liked relating to this activity was participating in the Padlet board feedback .
