Through a lens artist research - Neil Mendoza

 Neil Mendoza Research

Neil Mendoza’s work consists of a combination of found objects, sculpture and technology that create interesting and interactive digital and physical exhibitions around the world which can be viewed with a Variety of interpretations and perspective. Some well-known spaces that have exhibited Mendozas work galleries include The Barbican, BBC The Museum of London and The V&A.

I spy - Neil Mendoza -

"This piece questions the role that all of the little gadgets we use from day to day play in our lives. Frequently, they are a form of escapism, used to avoid thinking and interacting by staring into the information space. Often they are being used as a tool to spy on us and gather data about our habits. For once, they are “consciously” staring back at us, moving and following viewers around.  A computer uses a Kinect 3D camera to track people’s locations and then sends them to the motors that control the orientations of the screens within the mobile."- quote from Mendozas site

What like about this piece is the way that it has distorted the face creatively using technology. The combination of images invokes questions and curiosity such as whose faces are they? Are they important to the artist? Furthermore, the high-quality resolution adds to the professionalism and allows the viewer to observe more detail such as the colours in the eye ranging from yellow to blue. This piece is also interesting in terms of how it uses technology to interact with the audience and "consciously follow" them as they pass by which would impact on how they feel such as maybe uncomfortable or intrigued.

THE SELFIE-SELFIE-O-MATIC

Instructions
1. Sit in front of favourite photo.
2. Pose.
3. Trigger camera to take a Selfie.
4. If Selfie is hotter than favourite photo, remove favourite photo from frame and replace it with Selfie.

I also find this piece of work very interesting as it's uncommon for art to come with instructions, however, I think this engagement adds uniqueness and a fun aspect to Mendoza's work successfully.
